Self-Check

The clearest sign your mattress is finished is waking up stiff or sore and having it ease off within an hour of getting out of bed. That pattern — pain that the day fixes — points at the surface you slept on rather than at anything wrong with you. Add a visible dip, or the fact that you sleep better in hotel beds, and the case is closed.

Below is the check we walk people through when they call and ask whether they really need a new mattress, including the three situations where the answer is honestly no.

The 60-second check

Strip the bed down to the bare mattress and go through these. Three or more, and it is time.

  • You wake up sore, and it fades within an hour. Morning stiffness that disappears once you are moving is the single most common first sign. If it lasted all day, you would be looking at a medical cause instead.
  • You can see a dip when you look down the length of it. Crouch at the foot of the bed at mattress height and sight along the surface. A visible valley where you sleep — especially one that does not spring back — means the support core has given up.
  • You sleep better away from home. A hotel, a relative’s guest room, even a couch. If someone else’s bed consistently beats yours, that is your own mattress being outperformed by an average one.
  • You have started rolling toward the middle. Two people, two compressed troughs, and a ridge between them. Once you are fighting gravity to stay on your own side, the mattress is structurally done.
  • You hear it. Creaks, pings and grinding from an innerspring mean coils are failing or the wire is fatigued.
  • Your allergies or congestion are worse in bed. Years of accumulated dust mites and dander in an old, humid mattress will do that, and no amount of washing the sheets touches it.
  • You toss and turn far more than you used to. When a mattress stops relieving pressure, your body keeps changing position to find relief. You will not remember doing it; you will just feel unrested.
  • It is past ten years old and you cannot remember buying it. Most quality mattresses are built for roughly seven to ten years of nightly use. Plenty of people run them fifteen or twenty — that is common, not correct.
  • The edges collapse when you sit down. Weak edge support means the perimeter foam has broken down, which usually means the middle is not far behind.

Three times it is not the mattress

We talk people out of buying a mattress more often than you might expect, because these three cost far less to fix.

1The base failed, not the mattress.Pull the mattress off and look at what is under it. A cracked slat, a sagging box spring, or slats spaced more than about three inches apart on a foam mattress will create exactly the dip you are blaming the mattress for. Foam and hybrid mattresses need continuous or closely spaced support; put one on a five-slat frame and it will fail early no matter what you paid.
2It is the pillow.Neck and shoulder pain in the morning is more often a pillow-height problem than a mattress problem. If the pain is above your shoulder blades and your lower back is fine, replace the pillow first and give it two weeks.
3The mattress is fine but wrong.A three-year-old mattress with no dip that leaves your hips aching was probably the wrong firmness from day one. That is a comfort-layer problem, and sometimes a topper genuinely solves it. A topper cannot fix a sagging support core, though — it only makes a broken mattress feel plush for a few months.

How long should a mattress actually last?

Seven to ten years for most types, with the construction mattering more than the price tag.

TypeTypical usable lifeHow it usually fails
Innerspring6–8 yearsCoils fatigue and the surface dips; noise starts
Memory foam7–10 yearsFoam softens permanently in the sleep zones
Hybrid8–10 yearsComfort layer flattens before the coils go
Latex10–15 yearsSlow, even softening rather than a dip

A warranty covering fifteen years is not a promise the mattress will feel good for fifteen years. Most warranties only cover a sagging depth of an inch or more measured with nothing on the bed — comfort loss well short of that is not a defect.

Does Central Florida wear mattresses out faster?

Humidity does not shorten the life of the foam or coils much, but it changes what happens around them. Moisture that a mattress absorbs overnight dries more slowly here, which is what makes dust mites and mildew a bigger factor in Oviedo than in a dry climate. Two habits do most of the work: use a washable, breathable protector rather than a plastic-backed one, and pull the covers back for twenty minutes in the morning instead of making the bed immediately, so the surface can dry out.

Air conditioning helps and hurts. It keeps humidity down, but a mattress pushed against an exterior wall in a room that swings between 68 and 78 degrees will collect condensation underneath. Leave a couple of inches of clearance.

If your back pain is the reason you are reading this: a new mattress fixes back pain caused by poor support, and does nothing for back pain from anything else. The tell is timing. Worse in the morning and better by lunch points at the bed. Worse as the day goes on, or worse after sitting, points somewhere else — and that is a doctor’s question, not a mattress question.

What to do next, in order

Check the base first, because it is free. Then check the pillow, because it is cheap. If the mattress itself has a visible dip or is past its expected life, replace it — and go lie on the replacement before you buy it, because firmness is the thing people get wrong twice in a row. We wrote a step-by-step guide to testing a mattress in a showroom that covers exactly how long to spend and what to feel for.

If you are local, the showroom is in Oviedo and easy to get to from Winter Springs, Casselberry and Sanford. We haul the old mattress away when we deliver the new one, and there is financing if the timing is awkward.

Questions people actually ask

How do I know if my mattress is bad?

Sight down the length of the bare mattress from the foot of the bed. A visible dip that does not recover is the objective test. The subjective one: do you wake up sore in a way that clears within an hour, and do you sleep better in other people’s beds? Two yeses and a dip means it is bad.

My mattress is 15 to 20 years old. Is that actually a problem if it feels fine?

Plenty of people run one that long. The catch is that support degrades slowly enough that you adapt to it, so “feels fine” is not reliable after year twelve. Do the dip check. If the surface is genuinely flat and you wake up without stiffness, there is no urgent reason to replace it.

Can a mattress cause lower back pain, and will a new one fix it?

Yes, if the support core is letting your hips sink out of line, and yes — people do resolve years of morning back pain by changing the bed. But only when the timing pattern fits: worse on waking, better within an hour. If your pain is constant or worsens through the day, a mattress is not the fix.

Will a mattress topper save an old mattress?

It can fix the wrong feel on a structurally sound mattress. It cannot fix a sagging one — you will feel the dip through the topper within a couple of months, having spent a couple of hundred dollars to delay the decision.

Do you take the old mattress away?

Yes. When we deliver and set up the new one, the old mattress goes back on the truck with us. You do not need to arrange a bulk pickup or get it to the curb. If you are not buying a replacement right now, we wrote up the other routes in how to get rid of an old mattress in Seminole County.
